: On what would otherwise be the last day of the month, we will performing our second concert of the season! Come and join us for an exciting program featuring works by Dvorak, Haydn and Kelly-Marie Murphy.
Dvorakâs âCypressesâ are a set of piano miniatures that were inspired by the poetry of Moravian poet Gustav Pfleger. Later arranged by Dvorak for string quartet in 1887, they beautifully intertwine whimsical folk elements with a contrapuntal richness. In âDark Energyâ Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy takes us on a journey to the early beginnings of our universe, employing complex rhythmic layers and an expansive tonal language to capture the chaotic and tenuous conditions present before and after the Big Bang. One of the true masterpieces of the string quartet genre, Haydnâs âString Quartet in C Major, Op. 76 No. 3â is abound with flowing lines, drama, humour and melodic inventiveness. The second movement is a theme and variations based upon his famous âEmperor Hymnâ, a melody which people will now recognize as the basis for the German national anthem.
Light snacks and beverages will be provided during intermission.
